Is Substance Use Really the Cause of Homelessness?

Updated: May 11, 2021

In Houston today, many Houstonians do not realize that homelessness is not just caused by substance use and mental and physical health, but over 50% of this issue is caused by economic crisis including the lack of affordable housing and job loss. There has been a significant decrease of homelessness since 2011, but this problem continues to impact the Houstonian community. Without any housing, these homeless families and people do not feel safe and to house them comes at a high-cost for Houston. This economic housing catastrophe starts leading to more problems because as the homeless population grows in our community, “large sums of taxpayer dollars are spent on ambulance and fire response to emergencies, police intervention, emergency room visits, incarceration, street cleaning, and more," according to the Coalition for the Homeless.
